We are Machada 😌 a group of people living in community. We live on 30 hectares of land in the heart of the Algarve hills. Our values are honesty, realness, growth, nature-connected.

The water supply at Machada follows the principle of being close to nature and appreciating the resources of the Algarve. For daily needs such as the garden, laundry, showering, and cleaning, we use our large barragem, which connects us directly to the elements. ☀️

We consciously source our drinking water from the pure spring of Monchique. This active handling of water not only promotes our autonomy but also strengthens the awareness of the preciousness of this element within our community. 🇵🇹

In our togetherness, everyone bears the responsibility for mindful consumption. Since everyone is the „boss of their own area,“ we decide together on the sustainable use of our supplies to advance the development of the land in harmony with nature. ⛰️

This form of supply is part of our trial-and-error learning process from the last four years. It requires honesty in dealing with nature and creates a genuine, distraction-free connection to what sustains us. 🌊

Our energy supply at Machada is an important part of our autonomy and connection to nature. We harness the power of the sun with a 2 kW solar panel system, which draws our energy directly from the elements of the Algarve. ☀️

This electricity is stored in an efficient 48V battery system. This technical solution enables us to live a largely distraction-free life and supports our pursuit of sustainable development by meeting our needs responsibly. 🇵🇹

In our „Community Light,“ everyone bears the responsibility for a conscious use of existing resources. Since everyone here is the „boss of their own area,“ we learn together through practice how to best use the sun’s energy for our projects. ⛰️

After four years of experience, we know how to bring technology and nature into harmony. This system offers us the necessary freedom to concentrate on the essentials—growing together and peaceful togetherness in Bensafrim. 🌊

Yes, we use compost toilets to stay in harmony with the elements. This system supports our autonomy by transforming what is usually „waste“ into a valuable resource for our land. ☀️

In our cycle of growth, „poo“ eventually becomes potatoes, while „pee“ serves as natural fertilizer for the garden. This honest and direct handling of resources is a key part of our sustainable development on Machada. 🇵🇹
